Featured campaigns
Up and down the country, there are some amazing campaigns doing outstanding work to restore fairness to our society. We have chosen to showcase some that we have come across, as we believe they deserve a wider audience. Please help us amplify their message by reading and, if you think appropriate, showing your support. Typically, social justice issues affect us all, but don’t tend to get the column inches or attention that they deserve. We want to give these projects a boost so they can affect real and positive change.
The 99% Organisation
The 99% Organisation is an inclusive all-volunteer movement of people who want to preserve the social contract in the UK. Specifically, we aim to end mass impoverishment using peaceful means. We are independent of any political party and all our funds come from our volunteer members. We operate as a trusted source of high-quality news and analysis. The 99% Organisation calls for Five Key Actions: 1. Governments must govern for the 99%, not for the benefit of a small but influential segment of society 2. Fact-based policy-making – we need meaningful penalties for misleading the public 3. Policies to end mass impoverishment – over the last 13 years, the median wage has fallen in real terms, the longest such fall for 100 years; we need to reverse that trend 4. Investing in the future – the UK’s public services and infrastructure are crumbling, and we are not taking climate change seriously 5. Cleaning up capitalism – we must reengineer the profit motive into a force for good, so that unethical businesses no longer have a cost-advantage over ethical one. Our articles, reports, books and analysis have been recognised by, among other places, the Financial Times (Best Economics Books of 2019) and in Westminster (The Rational Policy-maker’s Guide to the NHS) www.99-percent.org/ |
Acts 435
Acts 435 is an online giving charity that stands in the gap for people in UK poverty. We help those in low paid, insecure work who have no funds to replace a broken appliance, or those who are changing benefits and are left with no income and are needing to put money on their electricity meter. We support everyone who has a need including families, refugees, those facing ill health, and those struggling with debt. Donors choose the specific need that interests them and give directly to that need. 100% of their donation goes in full to provide the item so desperately needed. Acts 435 works through a network of local partners who meet with those in need and post their request for help onto our website. www.acts435.org.uk |

APPEAL
APPEAL is a charity and law practice dedicated to fighting miscarriages of justice and demanding reform. It screens to find cases with merit and high potential impact, and then digs deep to find the fresh evidence that proves a conviction is unsafe or a sentence is unfair. It brings cases to the criminal cases review commission, the administrative court and the court of appeal. It works with former prisoners, campaigners, students, legal professionals, policy makers and other stakeholders to ensure our justice system learns from its mistakes. Appeal works with some of the best barristers in the country, who largely work pro bono. It also works with law students in universities across England and Wales, ensuring that the next generation of criminal lawyers graduate with an acute awareness of the system’s frailties and their duty as lawyers to challenge it where it makes mistakes. www.appeal.org.uk |

Good Business Charter

The Good Business Charter seeks to raise the bar on business behaviour and see a fairer, sustainable world where people matter. www.goodbusinesscharter.com |
Good Law Project
The Good Law Project uses our legal system to rebalance wrongs in society. It fights on three main fronts: 1. Holding power to account. It strengthens and enforces the law against the government and others with power. It fights for transparency, good Government, and good governance. 2. Protecting the environment. It strengthens and enforces the law against those who harm the environment or fail to adequately protect it. It prioritises local geographic areas and natural assets with national significance. 3. Ensuring no one is left behind. It helps marginalised communities access what the law can do. It supports and amplifies marginalised voices and communities. www.goodlawproject.org |

Parallel Histories
Parallel Histories works to build social cohesion by changing the way history is taught in schools. We offer a new way to study the history of conflict - history which is still contested, controversial and relevant. We say: Don’t shy away from controversial history - seek out competing narratives, lay them side by side, and challenge your students to immerse themselves in both and form their own judgement. Our teaching methodology challenges students to examine the source evidence and debate alternative interpretations before coming to their own view. These are skills which not only help young people with the study of history, but also prepare them to become active citizens in healthy pluralistic democracies. www.parallelhistories.org.uk |

Ungripp
Ungripp campaigns on behalf of everyone affected by the Indeterminate Sentence for Public Protection (IPP) in England and Wales. IPP prison sentences mean that someone could serve a life sentence for any crime. They were abolished in 2012, but they were never abolished retrospectively, so there are still some 3,000 people serving life sentences for any of 153 crimes, including affray and criminal damage. IPP sentences are notoriously difficult to appeal against, so the 3,000 still imprisoned have very little chance of being released, unless the law changes to pardon those still held by a law that has long since been scrapped. www.ungripp.com |
Zero Hours Justice
Zero Hours Justice is fighting to end the practice whereby these contracts are unilaterally imposed because the great majority of workers rely on such employment as a primary source of income and thus loathe their precarious position. More people than ever before are being exploited by zero-hours contracts in the UK today and suffer as a result. With many companies looking to keep staff costs low and their profits up, the impact on these individuals is huge - living day-to-day without knowing whether they will earn enough money to pay for food and rent. The public sector is thought to be the biggest user of zero-hours contracts, so there is also a question of whether our taxes are being spent in an ethical way. It should not be socially acceptable for people to be employed on this basis and for organisations to have such a lack of care for the people who work for them. www.zerohoursjustice.org |
