Liberty took the UK government to court to defend the right to protest – and WON
The Court of Appeal has ruled anti-protest laws which completely ignored the will of Parliament are UNLAWFUL It could have big implications for protesters in the UK – including those who have already been jailed Hundreds of people who were simply trying to make their voices heard should now get their convictions overturned and even more should have their cases thrown out of the criminal justice system. Our ability to speak out on important issues is fundamental to a functioning democracy. Liberty’s victory must be a springboard for Labour to start protecting everyone’s right to protest. The governments defeat sends a powerful message that parliamentary democracy exists to make sure a government can’t just do whatever it wants. That must be respected - and that includes by this government. Will the Prime Minister now do the right thing & scrap these unlawful regulations which he opposed in opposition? CAMPAIGN FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE is proud to have supported Liberty’s case Human rights are universal - if we start stripping away basic human rights from any section of society then none of us has rights – just privileges that can be taken away by people in power whenever they want.
